Hackers attacked indie game Minecraft’s servers this week in what may have been a campaign to convince its developer to update more, according to a report Thursday.

A post from the 4chan message board, as quoted on Kotaku, claimed responsibility for the server invasion, writing that “they” are hoping to send a message to Minecraft developer Markus “Notch” Persson: Add more content to the game.

“Start providing your customers with the updates that you promise them,” the post read. The group threatened to continue the server attack for the next week, boasting access to “roughly 83,000 bots.”

Minecraft, a sandbox computer game that allows players to construct and take apart a virtual block-based world, is currently in alpha. Persson plans to add new Halloween content on October 31, including portals, more difficult monsters, and pumpkin hats.

Persson updated his blog with an explanation of the attack, which appears to be a Distributed Denial of Service. It essentially eats up a large amount of resources on the server, preventing other users from accessing those resources, Persson explained.

If the 4chan post is true, it seems like a pretty misguided effort. Wouldn’t an attack on Minecraft’s servers just force Persson to spend his time fixing them instead of adding more content? Just saying.
